A Fan Coil Unit (FCU) is a terminal HVAC device designed to provide efficient heating and cooling within individual spaces. It consists of a fan, fan motor, heat exchanger (coil), condensate drain pan, air filter, casing, and other essential components.
The unit operates by circulating chilled water from a chiller or hot water from a boiler through the heat exchanger. As room air is drawn into the unit and passes over the coil, heat is either absorbed or released, depending on the operating mode. The conditioned air is then supplied back into the space, maintaining the desired indoor temperature.
The chilled or hot water is circulated through the building's piping network by circulation pumps. During cooling operation, the chilled water absorbs heat from the return air, while during heating operation, hot water transfers heat to the airflow. The water then returns to the central plant for reconditioning before being recirculated, ensuring continuous and energy-efficient operation.
The air filter removes dust and airborne particles before the air reaches the coil, improving indoor air quality while protecting internal components. Easily removable and washable filters simplify maintenance and help maintain long-term performance.
The heat exchanger is the primary component responsible for transferring heat between the circulating water and the airflow. Its heating and cooling capacity depends on factors such as tube diameter, number of coil rows, and fin density, making proper coil selection essential for optimal system performance.
Ceiling-concealed fan coil units incorporate a condensate drain pan to collect moisture generated during cooling operation and discharge it safely into the drainage system. Proper drain pan design helps prevent water leakage and protects surrounding building finishes.
The coil is manufactured from copper tubes with mechanically bonded aluminum fins, providing excellent heat transfer efficiency. Depending on the operating mode, chilled or hot water circulates through the coil to cool or heat the supply air.
The fan motor powers the blower that draws air through the filter and coil before delivering conditioned air into the occupied space. High-efficiency motors ensure quiet operation, reliable performance, and low energy consumption, making fan coil units suitable for residential, commercial, and institutional buildings.
